SAMM was founded in 2003 by Kelly Karger after she and her husband, Jim, moved to Mexico and witnessed the needless suffering of homeless and neglected dogs on city streets and surrounding areas. After further investigation, they discovered that in most areas of Mexico dogs and cats are gathered up by Departments of Ecologia and euthanized by electrocution, drowning, or shooting. A handful of Mexican cities are changing this policy but most have not.
They also help with spay/neuter campaigns and educate people about spaying and neutering, vaccinating and giving pets proper care and treatment.
In 2005, Mary and Steve Dolch of Albuquerque, New Mexico, joined SAMM to help save even more dogs. They have been an valuable asset to the mission of SAMM by helping to transport and by networking which has resulted in more adoptions and foster families for rescued Mexican street dogs.
Jim and Sally Osbon have joined the effort having recently made their first run to Santa Fe, New Mexico in August, 2007, with precious cargo. They were a bit overwhelmed but not discouraged have made several trips since.
Every two or three months one of these couples load up their vehicle with crates, leashes, food and water and as many dogs as have places to go (adoptive families or other rescue groups) and head to the border and beyond. You can see photos of one of our recent trips by clicking here.
 It’s always a “real trip!”
